Dugle and Cartwright Combine for Nine Hits; Asbury Sweeps Johnson to Finish Regular Season

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
KNOXVILLE, Tn.--- Kaden Dugle and Ethan Cartwright combined for nine hits and five RBIs to lead Asbury (22-13-1) to a doubleheader sweep over Johnson University 10-7 and 8-3 in Knoxville, Tn., to finish the 2023 regular season. 

Asbury's offense produced double-digit hits in both games, using 12 in game one and 10 in game two. Dugle and Cartwright were responsible for six in game one and three in game two. 

Eli Wilder and Brody Bearden both grabbed wins on the mound, taking their team-leading win amounts to five apiece. Holten Handel and Caleb Poll both struck out three hitters from the bullpen to hold Johnson off in late inning pushes. 

Game One | ASBURY 10, JOHNSON 7
Asbury's offense scored the first eight runs of game one on eight hits in four innings, going up 8-0 after a three-spot in the top of the fourth. Kaden Dugle topped the hot start off with a three-run home run, his fourth of the year and third in two weeks. 

Freshman starter Brody Bearden held Johnson off the scoreboard until the bottom of the fourth when the Royals scored three runs on three hits, 8-3. Bearden went 5.2 innings with eight hits, four earned runs and five strikeouts in his outing.

Johnson scored four more runs in the sixth, bringing the game within one at 8-7. Holten Handel went the next three innings with no runs allowed and three strikeouts to take his second save of the year. 

AU added a run in the seventh and another in the ninth off a Colton Perkins RBI-single to add insurance runs, eventually taking game one 10-7. 

Game Two | ASBURY 8, JOHNSON 3
AU jumped early again in game two, scoring six runs in the first three innings to go up 6-0. Nathaniel Frank tripled in the second to score Colton Perkins and Ethan Cartwright

After the Eagles added another in the fifth from an Ethan Cartwright double, Johnson scored their first three runs in the bottom half on two hits. The Royals' three runs took the game to 7-3, Asbury. 

Eli Wilder went five complete innings for AU with three runs (none earned) and struck out six. Caleb Poll came on in the sixth after Johnson scored three to give two innings of scoreless work and struck out three. 

Asbury added another run in the top of the ninth for insurance on a Quinn Nobles RBI-single, 8-3. Freshman Cayden Devine came out of the pen for the last two innings with no runs allowed.

AU took their 22nd win of the season 8-3 to sweep the day and finish the 2023 regular season strong before heading into postseason play.
