WILMORE, Ky. --- Asbury softball hosted NCCAA Regional Opponent, Covenant College, on Tuesday evening at 3pm and 5pm. Asbury fell to Covenant in game one in extra innings, 3-2. The Eagles were unable to make up for it in game two, dropping to the Scots 7-3.
The two runs scored in game one were results of
Taylor Enlow's deep drive to the right side, resulting in the lone two RBIs of the game.
Starting pitcher for game one,
Josie Deatherage, pitched a long nine innings throwing 138 pitches. Deatherage had 7 hits and produced six strikeouts.
In game two,
Taylor Sanders grabbed two RBIs and
Natalie Ison had one RBI.
Game One:
In game one Asbury and Covenant had a quick three innings to start the game, with only one hit recorded by the Scots in the second.
In the top of the fourth, Covenant put up the first run of the game off of an error by AU.
The Eagles were unable to answer in the bottom of the fourth.
The fifth inning was scoreless for both teams, with the Eagles only finding one hit in the bottom of the firth by senior captain
Abby Fletcher.
At the top of the sixth, Covenant scored one run off of a standup triple, bringing the Scots to a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth Asbury began to gain momentum after
Natalie Ison singled down the left field line. A sacrifice bunt from
Isabel Rochemont advanced Ison to second, and
Kaitlyn Wilson took a hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. It was then that captain
Taylor Enlow hit a standup double through the right side, giving her two RBIs and bringing in Ison and Wilson to tie up the game 2-2.
After both teams held the 2-2 tie at the end of the seventh, the game went into extra innings until Covenant found a run in the top of the ninth, sealing the win, 3-2.
This sent the Eagles into Game Two with a record of 1-10.
Game Two:
The Eagles went into game two looking to grab an early lead on the Scots after Covenant grabbed one run on the top of the first.
After Covenant scored one in the top of the first, Asbury quickly retaliated with
Taylor Enlow doubling through the right side, followed by
Taylor Sanders doubling down the left field line, bringing Enlow home to tie the game 1-1.
Natalie Ison then hit a line drive down the right line to bring Sanders home, giving the Eagles an early 2-1 lead.
The second inning was scoreless for both teams, moving them into the third 2-1.
In the top of the third Covenant scored four runs to make it a 5-2 game.
The Eagles were unable to answer the Scots, ending with a quick third inning.
In the fourth and fifth inning, neither team was able to make a move offensively, until the top of the sixth when Covenant No. 5, Lakyn Hackur hit a two-run home run and made it a 7-2 game.
After the Scots' home run, the Eagles were unable to retaliate, going through a quick bottom of the inning.
In the final inning, Kaylee Jo Myers pinch hit for
Isabel Rochemont, earning a single through the middle. It was then
Taylor Enlow up at the plate, who singled through the left side to advance Rochemont to second after she pinch ran for Myers.
Taylor Sanders then singled to right field, bringing Rochemont home for AU's third run.
Despite the late push from the Eagles in game two in the bottom of the seventh, they were unable to match Covenant's lead, falling 7-3.
The Eagles now hold a record of 1-11.

On Friday, March 10, the Eagles will host Midway University at 3pm, followed by a second game at 5pm. This game was previously rescheduled due to weather.
