HILTON HEAD, SC. --- Asbury tennis kicked off their spring break competition in Hilton Head, S.C., with matches on Tuesday. The men's team swept Indiana University East 9-0 to start their week while the AU women fell 4-5 to Edgewood College.
Men's Tennis
The Asbury men's tennis team (5-1) continued their strong 2022-2023 season with a clean sweep to start the week of spring break. AU defeaterd IU East 9-0 in their first meeting since the River States Conference Championship in 2021 when AU defeated the Red Wolves in a 4-3 thriller.
Asbury took all three doubles matches and were led by No. 3 group
Franco Patino and
Ignacio Ardiles taking a convincing 8-1 win over IU East.
In a dominant overall match for AU it was again the freshman Igancio Ardiles from Buenos Aires, Argentina, sweeping his entire No. 6 sinlges match over IU East, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman
Yousef Ismail was right behiind with a strong 6-0, 6-1 singles win in the No. 5 match.
AU moves to 5-1 on the spring season and 1-0 in their spring break week.
Women's Tennis
Asbury women's tennis (1-2) competed in their first match since February 21 and battled a first time opponent in Edgewood College (10-4). The teams battled back and forth throughout the match before Asbury fell for a tough lost to Edgwood, 4-5.
Asbury No. 1 doubles group
Ariadna Zegarra and
Megan Moore jumped right in for the Eagles with an 8-5 win. Edgewood responded with a key No. 2 doubles 8-6 win over Asbury's
Kourtney Kawata and
Fernanda Heredia. Edgewood took the No. 3 doubles match as well to grab the doubles point.
In singles it was Zegarra falling in a tight tiebreak to Edgewood in the No. 1 match. Asbury's
Megan Moore took a strong win in the No. 2 match, 6-4, 6-2. Mikada West and
Fernanda Heredia also took wins for AU, both in tiebreaks.
The match came down to the No. 6 singles match with Edgewood's Christina Ekkela was able to win in a tiebreak over
Olivia Rogowski.
The Asbury women move to 1-2 on the season and will look to respond Wednesday in their match with Concordia University (Wis.).
