UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Oh.--- Asbury women's basketball (0-1) opened the 2023-24 season tonight at the Winking Lizard Tip-Off Tournament in Unversity Heights, Oh., on Friday night. The Eagles fell to John Carroll University (1-0), 44-70 in the first game of the tournament.
AU was led in scoring by sophomore
Morgan Flannery, who put up 10 points on 3-5 shooting and a perfect 3-3 night from the free-throw line. Flannery was also active on the defensive side adding three steals to her box score.
The Eagles were led in rebounding by
Camryn Preston,
Spencer Harvey, and
Morgan Flannery who all totaled four boards on the night.
Haleigh Releford scored eight points with two three-pointers in her first game after a sophomore year of 367 points.
Trinity Shearer added six points on the night and went 2-4 beyond the arc for the game after leading AU in 2022-23 with 398 points.
Asbury was able to garner 13 points off turnovers and recorded 14 points in the paint. The Eagles turned John Carroll over 13 times during the matchup.
The Blue Streaks were able to get off to a quick 13-7 lead with 3:56 left in the first quarter, but AU was able to cut things down to 15-17 by the end of the quarter.
John Carroll's defense took control in the second quarter, outscoring AU 16-3 to take a 33-18 lead into the halfway mark.
The AU offense responded coming out of the break with three pointers from
Trinity Shearer,
Haleigh Releford, and
Celia Pelfrey during the quarter. The Blue Streaks still led 52-31 heading to the fourth.
The second quarter run would prove to be too much for the Eagles and John-Carroll took the early-season win by a score of 44-70.
The Eagles will look to bounce back and get to .500 tomorrow, when they take on Penn State-Behrend at 3 PM.
