RIO GRANDE, Oh.--- The Asbury women's basketball team (10-9) came back from over a week-long break and hit the road to take on the University of Rio Grande (19-3). The Eagles fought hard but were unable to find a win, and lost the game 99-59.
Trinity Shearer led the Eagles with 15 points, followed by
Jaclynn Ruble and
Haleigh Releford with 13 for Ruble and 12 for Releford. Ruble led AU's defensive end with five rebounds, two assists, and four steals.
Rio senior, Ella Skeens led the Red Storm with an impressive game, recording a double-double with 50 points and 12 rebounds.
The game began with both teams going point-for-point as each were battling to find a solid lead in the first. The teams matched each other and ended the first 18-18.
Rio pressed the gas in the second and heavily outscored AU 29-5, ending the second with Rio up 47-23.
Jaclynn Ruble led Asbury's retaliation in the third with eight points and three boards, going 3-4 in the field.
Trinity Shearer followed behind with seven points. AU outscored Rio 22-21 in the third and ended with Rio still holding their lead, 68-45.
Despite AU's push in the third, they were not able to keep the pressure on and Rio bounced back with their highest-scoring quarter of the game, recording 31 points over Asbury's 14. The game resulted in a loss for Asbury, 99-59.
The Eagles move to a 10-9 record after tonight's loss.
