LACONIA, In. --- The Asbury men's and women's golf teams kicked off the fall 2022 athletics season for Asbury University this weekend in Laconia, In. The Eagles were led by sophomore Garret Sturges who tied for third in the tournament, while the women's and men's overall placings were third each.
The women's team competed against Pikeville University and Spalding University while the men matched up with Pikeville, Spalding, and Berea. Sturges, a business administration major from Brookline, NH posted a par round on Saturday and followed that up with a 73 in his second round to finish the tournament at 1 over. Victor Vargas also finished in the top 10 of the tournament for AU, shooting a 74 and 77 to finish at 7 over par for the weekend.
Maddie Heineman, a junior media communications major from Greenwood, IN played extremely well finished the tournament tied for third place overall. Heineman shot an 88 on day 1 and the second lowest score on day 2 at 85 to finish the weekend strong.

"Our teams got off to a great start. Garrett (Sturges) played solid both days. Maddie (Heineman) came in and played steady, like she does. I'm really proud of both our teams, the weather was very hot. We had some players get hurt over the weekend which we will get them looked at, and hopefully they'll be able to go next weekend."

The AU men's golf team will play next on Sept. 10 & 11 in Florence, IN at Battle at Belterra hosted by Hanover College. The women's team will return to action September 17 & 18 at the AU Fall Invitational at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, KY.
