MOBILE, Al. - Both Asbury tennis teams were invited to compete in the NCCAA National Tournaments in Mobile, Al in response to their strong regular season. The tournament began today with both teams competing at 10 am. The women's team fell to the top ranked Campbellsville University 0-4, and the men's squad fell to the 2 seed Judson University 1-4.
Asbury's men's team was led by the junior, Gregorio Engles taking a victory over Judson 6-1 and 6-4. Joseph Lewis also competed well with Judson taking a set from them, 6-2. Alejandro Ceres was also battling with Judson in the second set leading 4-3, but his match was not finished as Judson confirmed their victory. The doubles competitions were close as Tanner Sparks and Luiz Hartkpf were just edged by Judson, 4-6. Joseph Lewis and Rodrigo Cavero were tied with Judson 4-4 in their doubles match when the match was called off due to Judson securing the victory.
The AU men's team will match up with Oakland City tomorrow, May 11 at 10 am for the second match iin this round robin format.
The Women's team competed with a very strong Campbellsville University top seed in their first match of the tournament. Isabella Gutierrez battled with Campbellsville, dropping the first set of the match 4-6 before the match was ended early due to Campbellsville securing the victory. Grace Gorby and Isabella Gutierrez were also competing strong with Campbellsville in their doubles match, trailing 2-3 before the match was finished due to Campbellsville securing the win.
The Asbury women's team will move on to match up with Oakland City on Thursday at 10 am.
