WILMORE, Ky.--- Senior guard
Dakota Walden dropped 29 points on 10-15 FG and 3-5 3PT to lead Asbury over Covenant in the Asbury Luce Center on Tuesday night, 83-69.
AU never trailed after an 11-0 start, taking the strong opening win over a Covenant team that topped them two times last season.
Nick Fort started his season off with a double-double, 15 points and 10 rebounds. Clayton Winter led Asbury on the boards with 13 as the Eagles dominated the glass with 42 rebounds compared to Covenant's 25. Winter also notched a double-double of his own with 13 boards and 10 points.
Junior transfer Caleb Wallis opened his Asbury career with a solid nine points and four rebounds. Sophomore Ben McNew was key as well going 3-5 for 3PT and grabbing four rebounds.
Asbury's offense powered the first half, taking a 44-34 heading into the break shooting 52.2% from the field and 6-11 from three.
Covenant made their run five minutes into the second half taking a 14-2 swing to cut their deficit to 56-58. This is as close as Covenant would get as Asbury received consecutive buckets from
John Shoulders and Caleb Wallis to get their lead back to six.

Dakota Walden began to take over, scoring Asbury's next ten points to power them to a 72-65 lead. Walden's run started with an and-one mid-range jumper that sparked his confidence into the rest of the night.
Asbury's defense held Covenant under 70 and their offense put up 83 points to take the season opening win over Covenant for a 1-0 start on the year.

Asbury will travel to Michigan on Friday a 3 pm game against Grace Christian University. Asbury will play another game in Michigan on Saturday at 5 pm against Great Lakes Christian College.
