Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Releford Leads Asbury Past Centre, 65-63

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
DANVILLE, Ky.--- For the second time in two days Asbury women's basketball took a two point victory in Danville, Ky., this time against host school Centre College. 21 points and seven rebounds from guard Haleigh Releford powered a fourth quarter comeback win for Asbury as they took their third straight win, 65-63.

Releford's 21 points is her season-high as she leads the Asbury team averaging 13 a game. Camryn Preston followed Releford with 11 points on 5-7 shooting with four rebounds and two blocks. Spencer Harvey led AU on the glass with a season-high nine boards, adding eight points, three assists and two steals.

Trinity Shearer led the Eagles in assists with four, also scoring nine points with three rebounds and a steal.

AU's "controlled chaos" style of defense turned Centre over 23 times, leading to 22 Eagle points off turnovers. Asbury gathered ten steals on the night, their fifth time out of five games this year in double-digit steals.

In another low-scoring game for Asbury they were able to hold Centre to only shooting 33.3% from the field. AU leaned on their defense all night as they shot 39.7% from the field, but scored when it mattered most with 17 points in the fourth.

Asbury's offense started the game on fire, taking an early 14-4 lead. Centre finished the last four minutes of the quarter with a 16-5 run giving them a 20-19 lead after one.

Centre led the second quarter as well with strong defense, holding Asbury to only nine points. AU went into the halftime break trailing by seven on Centre's home court, 28-35.

For the second game in a row Chad Mayes got his team's offense right at the half as they produced their highest scoring quarter of the game in the third. AU scored on their first three possessions of the half quickly getting within one at 34-35. Centre's offense responded by scoring 18 points of their own in the quarter to head into the fourth up 53-48.

Centre led AU 59-50 with under seven minutes to go in the game. A three from Tiffani Riley for Asbury sparked a 15-4 run for Asbury to close out the game to complete a comeback victory over Centre for their third straight win. Clutch consecutive buckets from Trinity Shearer with a layup and a jumper gave Asbury their 62-61 lead they wouldn't let up.

With this win Asbury moves to above .500 for the first time this year and completes the week at a perfect 3-0.
