Caleb Wallis and graduate student
Nick Fort combined for 49 points on Saturday night to take Asbury to 5-0 with a gutsy road win over Berea College (3-2), 81-73. This is the best start to an Asbury men's basketball season since 2014-15 when the Eagles started 5-0 before falling in their sixth game.
Fort scored a season-high 28 points and collected 11 rebounds for his third double-double in five games. Fort was also 6-6 from the line with three steals and three assists.
Wallis followed Fort with an incredible game scoring 21 points (tying his season-high), grabbing eight rebounds and dishing eight assists with four made three's. Wallis is now 12-22 from three in his first five games in an Asbury uniform.
Clayton Winter was a perfect 5-5 from the field with ten points and five boards.
John Shoulders grabbed six crucial rebounds and had three assists for AU.
AU started the night off with seven straight points to take a very early 7-0 lead over Berea. The Eagles continued their offense throughout the first half, taking their largest lead of the game off a
Caleb Wallis three giving them a 30-17 lead. Asbury made four three's in the half compared to Berea shooting 1-11 from three.
Berea closed the gap with a 8-2 run heading into halftime shortening their deficit to 27-32.
In the second half both offenses rose to the occassion easily outscoring their first half numbers. AU started the half with a three from
John Shoulders and layups from
Nick Fort and
Clayton Winter to get their lead back to ten (41-31).
Berea responded with a strong 13-2 run that gave them their first lead of the game with 13 minutes to go, 44-43. The rest of the game was back and forth buckets from both teams as Berea continued to stay right on the heels of Asbury throughout.
With just under three minutes to go Asbury grabbed two key offensive rebounds to extend a possession that ended in a
Caleb Wallis three to extend the Eagle lead to 71-66. AU carried this gap on throughout the final minutes to take the road win over Berea to move to 5-0.
