Women's Hoops Falls on Buzzer Beater in RSC Championship Semifinals

WILMORE, Ky. – The Asbury University women's basketball team fell in heartbreaking fashion on a buzzer beater on Saturday afternoon against WVU Tech at the Luce Center in the River States Conference Championship semifinals.

The Golden Bears were victorious 75-72, and hit the game winning three-point shot at the buzzer to advance to the championship final on Tuesday.

The Eagles, who played their second straight game with a reduced roster due to COVID, battled all the way until the end and never gave up, putting forth another great team effort.

Key Stats
*Senior Kelsey Johnson hit several big shots in the fourth quarter and led the Eagles with a team-best 18 points. Johnson also finished with seven rebounds.
*Spencer Harvey scored 17 points on 5-8 shooting, and Trinity Shearer totaled 12 points along with four assists.
*Kayla Harlow posted 12 rebounds, nine points and collected three blocks.
*Paige Taylor collected nine points and team-high five assists, while Emma Strunk chipped in with seven points.
*The Eagles shot 42 percent from the Field on Saturday, but were just 6-22 from three, marking a season low.
*AU scored 40 points in the paint and added 17 points scored off turnovers.
*WVU Tech won the rebounding margin 41-35 and scored 16 second chance points.

Highlights
*The contest was tied up at 7-7 early on, but the Eagles used a 10-0 run to take a 17-7 advantage later in the quarter.
*AU remained in front for the entirety of the first quarter, but WVU Tech would outscore AU 18-7 in the first six minutes of the second period to hold a 34-27 lead.
*The Eagles fought their way back into the game using a 12-5 run to end the half and tie up the game at 39 heading into halftime.
*Asbury played a great third quarter on both ends and led 55-47 following a 9-0 run capped off by a bucket in the paint from Kelsey Johnson.
*Heading into the fourth, AU led 62-56. However, WVU Tech would tie the game up again at 66 early into the final quarter.
*The contest was even at 72 with 53 seconds remaining. Asbury just barely missed on a good look in the paint and the Golden Bears would win it on a three at the horn.
 
The Eagles conclude the 2020-21 season with a record of 14-6.
