Women's Soccer Named NCCAA Regional Champions

OAKLAND CITY, In. - The Asbury Women's Soccer team secured their place in the NCCAA National Tournament this afternoon with a win over Oakland City for the Mideast Regional Championship.

Olivia Ruckriegel opened the scoring tab off an assist from Elizabeth Sparks on a corner kick in the first seven minutes of the game. Genevieve Hill would add goal number two just before the half, allowing AU a 2-0 lead going into the break.

Oakland City showed their determination to win, scoring a goal about five minutes into the second half, but Asbury responded with a beautiful goal from Delaney Long just six minutes later. That would bring the score to 3-1, with Asbury on top. Twelve minutes later, OCU caught AU on their heels and put another ball in the back of the net, but the Eagles were not backing down.

Rilen Gettings pushed past the defense and finished a through ball from Madie Boehnlein just a minute later, bringing the score to 4-2. That would complete Asbury's scoring for the evening, and the final score would finish out 4-3, with Asbury coming out on top.

Head Coach Elyse Overton had this to say about today's match:

"Not playing a match the last few weeks put pressure on us today as it took us some time to get into a rhythm. The time between our first two goals was a fight, and I'm proud of our ladies for making adjustments and not backing down. I think I'm most proud that we had an answer with each goal OCU scored; we didn't drop our heads and pout; we dug our toes in and continued to find the net. Credit to OCU and Coach Harrison on her squad's performance; it was a solid match. We're excited to prepare for the National Tournament and continue to push ourselves these next few weeks. Go Eagles!"
