PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The Asbury University volleyball team fell in five sets on Tuesday evening at Pikeville in non-conference action. AU drops to 3-6 on the year with the loss.
The Eagles won the first two sets comfortably at 25-14 and 25-17. However, Upike stepped its game up and came back to win the next three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-19, and 15-12.
Asbury finished the match with 43 kills and a .081 hitting percentage.
The Eagles led 11-10 early on in the opening set and then broke away with a huge lead after winning eight of the next nine points to cruise to an easy opening set win. With 22 kills combined in the first two sets, 14 of which came in set number two, Asbury was on a roll looking for a sweep after dominating the second set as well 25-17.
Asbury committed 21 errors in the third and fourth sets as Pikeville recorded 21 kills to force a fifth and final set.
AU won the opening point of the final set off of a
Hailey Jordan kill, but Upike would immediately reclaim the lead. The Eagles sliced the defiict down to 12-11 later on following a block assist from
Bethany Fye and
Julia Thompson.
Jordan came away with another kill to stave off the first match point, but the Bears would take the next point to win the set and the match.

Asbury is back in play again on the road on September 27. AU will open up River States Conference play at Brescia in Owensboro at 7 PM.
